Aquatic Leadership

Please register for all courses a minimum of 7 days in advance of the start date. Courses that do not have sufficient registration one week before the start date are subject to cancellation, with full refund to participants. Participants who choose to un-enroll in a course 2 weeks or more prior to a course will be issued a full refund. Participants who choose to un-enroll 2 weeks or less before the start of the course, or who do not have the appropriate pre-requisites at the start of the course, will not be refunded

We are still working out all of the details of the course updates with COVID-19 protocols. Some changes that you can expect include reduced numbers of participants in the class, increased cleaning and sanitizing of equipment, and use of PPE (masks, face shields). Participants may also be asked to bring a member of their family/social bubble to some classes to allow them to safely practice skills that require direct contact. This information will be communicated to you before the start of the course.

Lifesaving Society Bronze Star

Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Includes a timed 400 m swim. 

Prerequisite: None (Recommended 10 years of age and/or complete Star 7)

Members: $89.25

Non-Members $105.00

Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid with CPR-B

This program teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 400 m timed swim.

Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification (need not be current).

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross

Designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Includes a timed 400 m swim.

Bronze Cross is recognized as an assistant lifeguard certificate in Ontario Regulation 565 governing public swimming pools.

Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid certifications (need not be current). Recommended 14 years of age.

Members:  $174.25

Non-Members:  $205.00

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Pool

This certification is Canada's professional lifeguard standard.  The lifeguard's primary role is the prevention of emergency situations and where this fails, the timely and effective resolution of emergencies.  The NLS program is designed to prepare lifeguards to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics.  NLS training develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement, and communication skills. Fitness requirements include a timed objected recovery, 50m sprint challenge, 50m rescue drill and a 400m endurance challenge.

Prerequisites:  Minimum 15 years of age. Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross certification and Standard First Aid certification (need not be current) from a training agency approved by the Ontario government. The list of approved agencies can be found here.

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Pool Recertification

The National Lifeguard recertification exam is your opportunity to demonstrate your skills and recertify your award. You are responsible for reviewing the required content and skills and preparing yourself for the exam. Your exam is based on the National Lifeguard Award curriculum. The required content for this curriculum can be found in your Alert text and the Canadian Lifesaving Manual. Candidates should bring Alert, a whistle, barrier devices (gloves and pocket mask) and proof of prerequisite (previous National Lifeguard).

 Prerequisite: National Lifeguard Pool Certification (need not be current)

 Members:  $76.50 +HST

YMCA Assistant Swim Instructor

This program prepares candidates to effectively assist YMCA Swim Instructors to teach people how to swim and improve swimming techniques. Candidates will learn how to create a positive member or participant experience that furthers the YMCA mission, and build on their personal commitment to YMCA Mission, Vision, Values, Communicaiton, Planning and Organizing. There is a mentorship component to this program. 

Prerequisite: Bronze Cross, minimum 14 years of age.

YMCA Swim Instructor

This course is the foundation for building strong leaders in YMCA aquatics.  Content covers YMCA Healthy Child Development, planning effective lessons using progressions and activities, and an understanding of the YMCA E.G.G.S. (E - Explanation/Demonstration, G - Group Practice, Group Feedback, S - Specific Practice and Feedback teaching method.  Instructors will also review skills and strokes, different learning styles and temperaments, and how to react to emergency situations in a class setting.  Participants will also learn to deliver the Lifesaving Society Canadian Swim Patrol and Bronze Star.  The fee includes manual and certification.

 Prerequisites:  Minimum 16 years of age, Current National Lifeguard or Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid, Swim Strokes at YMCA Intermediate Stroke Standard or equivalent, Swim Skills at the YMCA Standard or equivalent.

Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructors

This course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving, first aid skills and resuscitation techniques in the Lifesaving Society's lifesaving and first aid awards.  Successful candidates in this course receive two certifications:  Lifesaving Instructor and Emergency First Aid Instructor.  The Lifesaving Instructor Course prepares instructors to teach the Lifesaving Society's:

·        Canadian Swim Patrol Program

·        Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Wading Pool Attendant

·        Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction, Diploma

·        Basic and Emergency First Aid, and CPR-A, CPR-B and CPR-C

Prerequisite:  Bronze Cross, be 16 years of age, must have YMCA Swim Instructors, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructors or Red Cross Swim Instructors.

Member:  $140.25 + HST
Non-Member:  $165.00 + HST

Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid with CPR-C

Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, chest injuries, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification.

 Prerequisite: None (recommended minimum 14 years of age)

 Member:  $178.50 +HST

Non-Member:  $210.00 +HST

Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid with CPR-C Recertification

Current Standard First Aid (SFA) award holders may recertify their Lifesaving Society SFA certification just once on a Lifesaving Society SFA Recertification Course not more than 3 years from the Standard First Aid date of issue. To renew SFA certifications subsequently, award holders must repeat the full SFA Course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertification and original courses.

Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate on a Lifesaving Society recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency.

Lifesaving Society Safeguard

Safeguard focuses on water safety awareness, accident prevention and the principles of aquatic safety supervision. Safeguard teaches participants how to identify hazards and at-risk behaviours, how to recognize potential victims, and how to respond safely in an aquatic emergency.

 Member:  $25+HST

Non-Member:  $35+HST
