Learn to Swim Program

The YMCA Learn to Swim program is a four-level instructional program that introduces your beginner swimmer to foundational aquatic activities. They will improve their body awareness and motor skills as they submerge, kick, roll, and jump in the water. They will be competent swimmers on their front and back when they complete Swimmer.

Program Schedule

Otter

Core skills include:

  • Submersion
  • Gliding
  • Back Glide 2m
  • Front Glide 1.5m
  • Side Glide 1.5M

Children are required to complete 3 of the following skills:

  • Log Roll
  • Water Safety
  • Jump into chest deep water
  • Two aquatic related rules
  • How to get help
  • Swim in deep water with a PDF

Seal

Core skills include:

  • Sumbmerge for 5 seconds
  • Kicking and rolling
  • Move from vertical to horizontal in deep water and swim to the wall
  • Jump into deep water and swim back to the wall
  • Front back and Side Glides (2m-5m)

Children are required to complete 3 of the following skills:

  • Throw a buoyant object to someone that needs help
  • Recover an object
  • Sitting Dive
  • Forward Somersault
  • Climb down a pole in deep water
  • Water Safety of choice

Dolphin

Core Skills include:

  • Swim underwater for 1.5m
  • Head first sculling on back for 3m

  •  Foot first surface dive

  •  Deep water bobs

  •  Tread water for 30 seconds

  •  Front swim 12m

  •  Back swim 18m

Children are required to complete 3 of the following skills:

  • Kneeling Dive

  •  Swim 25m in a PFD wearing a shirt and pants

  •  Backward somersault

  •  Put a PFD on in deep water

  •  Recover an object from deep water

  •  Cross country ski motion in deep water with floatation

  • Water Safety of choice
  • Water Safety of choice

Swimmer

Core skills include:

  • Swim underwater for 2.5m
  •  Jump into deep water, tread water for 40 seconds and swim back to wall
  •  Foot first surface dive to 1.5m deep and recover object
  •  Head first sculling for 5m
  •  Stationary sculling on back for 1m
  •  Front swim, back swim and side glide (25m) 

Children are required to complete 3 of the following skills:

  •  Pendulum Dive
  •  Swim 15m wearing a shirt and pants
  •  Swim underwater on back for 2m
  •  Climb head first down a pole 2m
  •  Vertical float in deep water
  •  Deep water bobs to 1.5
  •  Water polo ski
  •  Water safety of choice
