Specialty Sports, Arts, and Technology Camps

All campers who register for the following specialty half-day camps join us for the whole day, with a drop off time at your "home" YMCA between 8:00 - 9:00 am, and pick up time between 4:00 - 5:00 pm.
  • Unless otherwise noted, most of these specialty camps are half-day experiences that take place off-site, and include transportation. Supervision is provided all day by our YMCA Day Camp counsellors, and most program instruction, where applicable, is by the providers at the site.
  • Dance Camp, Video Game Design, Lego, Tennis, Junior Lifeguard and Junior Triathlon, stay onsite all day, and Dance, Jr. Lifeguard and Jr. Triathlon, have more program time specific to each specialty built into their day.
  • All campers registered in these programs spend a half day (afternoon, for most camps) at their "home" YMCA, for an action-packed afternoon (unless otherwise noted) of traditional camp activities including games, crafts and swimming.

Cooking
Calling all chefs!  This camp is for children who enjoy being in the kitchen and are interested in learning basic cooking skills. Put on your aprons and get ready to chop, mix, stir, melt and bake, while being provided fun food facts, including food safety and nutritional information. (Please be advised that we can not ensure an allergy-free zone.) Kitchener-Waterloo camps will be partnering with The Real Canadian Superstore.  The Cambridge camps will be partnering with Zehrs.

Horseback Riding
Campers travel by bus at 9:00 am to Windamere Equestrian in Baden for the morning, and arrive back at the YMCA around 12:30 PM. While at the stable, campers will learn about safety and ride horses, learn about and participate in the some basic care and chores, and other games and activities during the day. Parents are invited Friday morning to a horse show.

Junior Triathlon (full day, on site)
Do you enjoy swimming, biking and running? Come out and meet new friends and work on drills and endurance in our Jr. Triathlon Camp. Participants have the opportunity to learn new fitness skills, learn about good nutrition habits and healthy lifestyle choices while having fun and setting goals. On the last day of the camp, participants will be challenged to complete a mini triathlon within the facility to showcase all of their hard work. Campers will spend the full day in program with a certified YMCA Swim Instructor / Lifeguard.  All biking will be done on our indoor spin bikes.

Golf
Attention future golf pros!  Campers will learn the basics of golf from professionals, including etiquette, stance, grip, short game and long game. Campers will be bussed to Foxwood Country Club. Although previous golf experience is not required campers, campers will be placed with others at a similar experience level to best suit the golf instruction needs of each participant. More advanced players will spend increased time on the golf course while beginner golfers will focus more on basics within the practice facility.

Dance (full day, on site)
The YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo partner with qualified dance instructors to offer the ultimate dance experience. Dance Camp features themed days based on different dance styles such as ballet, lyrical, contemporary, modern, jazz, and musical theatre. Classes are creative, dynamic, energetic, fun and a great way to learn dance techniques and meet new friends. Dance spend their time in the dance portion of the day preparing for an end of the week performance for family and friends. Come with us and discover the love of dance! (No previous dance experience is necessary)

Junior Lifeguard (full day, on site)
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a lifeguard? Join one of our YMCA Lifeguards for a fun-filled and wet week of learning the "ins" and "outs" of life guarding. Experience and learn about the importance of daily life guarding routines such as: wearing a uniform, effective communication between guards, including whistle blowing and hand signals, shadow-guarding, making your own first aid kit, and taking a pool test. Campers spend the full day in program with a certified YMCA Swim Instructor / Lifeguard on-site at the YMCA and have the opportunity to earn their Basic or Emergency First Aid and CPR certifications. (Campers must be able to swim the full length of the pool.)

Rock Climbing
Reach new heights as you are introduced to indoor rock climbing at Grand River Rocks. Explore climbing technique while participating in fun and exciting games and challenges. Trained Instructors will help campers develop their own skills, as well as encourage and help them to work together in teams.  Equipment rentals are included.

Tennis (on site)
Tennis anyone?  Certified teaching pros from Tennis Fun will lead the kids through a variety of dynamic games, skills and challenges. Topics covered include ball control, tennis etiquette, fundamentals of the serve, serve return, forehand, backhand and volley, as well as basic score-keeping. Running shoes, sunscreen, hat, and a water bottle are a must. Participants may bring their own racquets if they choose.

Eco Explorers
Campers will enjoy spending time each day actively exploring and getting their hands dirty in the natural areas around the Laurel Creek Nature Centre. We'll discover and observe the amazing living things that call the forest, field, marsh and streams their home. We'll take a closer look by turning over rocks and logs, and scooping water, and learn how some land and water creatures survive, interact with, and rely on one another in their natural habitats.
