Leaders In Action

The focus of the LIA program is to help teens build confidence and self-esteem, while developing skills required of a leader within the YMCA and our community.  Participants are required to take Level 1 followed by Level 2 of the Educational Program before moving onto the Practical Program.  Leadership is best developed by spreading Level 1, Level 2 and Practical portions over different years rather than participating in all three programs during one summer.

Our Leaders In Action participants will have the opportunity to put their leadership skills into action each Wednesday as they will be participating in a half-day field trip each week helping to support the experience of our younger campers.  More information and detail will follow in your Parent Newsletter.

Please note, Stork Family Y LIA participants travel to Camp Heidelberg each day for their  program.

LIA Level 1 - Educational

Participants will be introduced to the YMCA's history and values. LIA Level 1 puts focus on leadership techniques and problem-solving skills. This program aims to transition LIA Level 1 participants from campers to leaders. Activities will include conflict resolution, communication styles, working with children, building relationships and program safety.

LIA Level 2 - Educational

Must complete LIA Level 1 before participating in LIA Level 2.

Participants will continue building on the lessons learned in LIA level 1 and develop skills that will help prepare participants for future employment in YMCA day camps. This session will focus more on planning full programs and facilitating camp wide activities for day campers. Participants will learn how to deliver age appropriate activities, while studying the principles of healthy child development, group dynamics and understanding behaviours. Self-reflection as well as feedback from peers and counsellors will help to build skills and give participants confidence in their leadership abilities.

Participants in the LIA Level 2 camp have the optional opportunity to participate in a campfire and sleepover at our YMCA Camp Heidelberg site.

Note:  The LIA Level 1 and 2 programs are 2 weeks inclusive.  Participants must take part in both weeks in order to successfully complete the program and move to the next level.

Leaders in Action - Practical

This program is the final stage of our LIA program.  Participants who have completed the Leaders in Action Educational portion will have an opportunity to put their new skills and knowledge into practice.  Participants will be paired with a councellor for the duration of the week to assist with day to day program planning and facilitation of activities.  Feedback from both a self-evaluation and the counsellor will help to identify strengths and areas for continued development.  This camp is a great way for youth to add valuable experience to their resumes and jump-start future volunteering opportunities at the YMCA.

Participants are welcome to complete multiple weeks of the LIA Practical program and will be placed with different age groups and camps based on their interest and previous experience.

Note:  Highschool Volunteer hours are not awarded for the participation in the Leaders in Action program. Placement in our Day Camp as part of the program is intended to be a practical application of the leadership skills gained throughout level 1 and level 2.
