Leaders In Action (L.I.A.s), Program Overview

Leaders in Action (LIAs)
This three-step program is designed as a stepping stone to help youth transition from being a day camper to volunteering in day camp, and eventually being as prepared as possible to apply and be successful in a day camp counselor role. Participants must first take level 1, followed by level 2, and are then able to register for level 3. Youth are encouraged to spread the three LIA levels over three separate summers giving them an opportunity to develop skills as they mature over time and have the best chance at success in a volunteer or paid staff position with our day camps. Leaders in action participants are not eligible for high school volunteer hours as these are registered programs.

Please note:  Stork Family Y L.I.A. level 1 & 2 participants travel to Camp Heidelberg each day for their  program. A.R. Kaufman level 1 & 2 Participants and Chaplin level 1 & 2 participants travel to Shade's Mills each day. L.I.A. level 3 participants will be placed by our coordinator in a camp most appropriate to their development.

L.I.A. Level 1

  • 12 - 15 Years
  • 2 Week Sessions

Stretch and grow as you step into day camp leadership. This two-week program has been designed to challenge and push our youth leaders while establishing a sense of community and connection between youth participants. LIAs participate in all the different activities that we offer in our day camp programs while being encouraged to look more closely at the principles behind program design and facilitation of these activities. Through games, activities, and discussion, youth leaders develop basic leadership skills with a focus on communication, teamwork, initiative, goal setting and problem solving. With pickup and drop off offered at each of our three YMCA branches, (Cambridge, Kitchener & Waterloo), LIAs travel by bus each day from their home YMCA to either Camp Heidelberg or Shade’s Mills for the majority of their program. LIAs spend most of their time outdoors and active, and though discussion and goal setting are a daily part of the program, there is very little ‘classroom’ style learning. All participants receive regular feedback throughout the program and a certificate of completion at the end of the two weeks.

L.I.A. Level 2

  • 12 - 15 Years

  • 2 Week Sessions

Continue your leadership growth and development as you transition into LIA level two. This second stage of our leadership program is meant to build upon the camp knowledge and basic skills learned in LIA level 1, which is a prerequisite for LIA level 2. Over two weeks, youth leaders focus their time gaining confidence in themselves and their facilitation of camp activities within their peer group. LIAs work towards a better understanding of team dynamics, a strength based approach, and the benefits of self-reflection and receiving feedback.

Participants who have completed levels 1 and 2 of our Leaders in Action Educational portion will put their new skills and knowledge into practice in this practical component of the program, and will:

  • work with a counsellor for the week to assist with day to day program planning and facilitation.
  • learn more about self-evaluation, and along with the counsellor will identify strengths, and strategies for continued development.
  • add valuable experience to their resumes and jump-start future volunteering opportunities at the YMCA

Participants are welcome to complete multiple weeks of the L.I.A. Practical program and will be placed with different age groups and camps based on their interest and previous experience.
