Director Message, Ki-Wa-Y Spring 2012

A message from

Camp Ki-Wa-Y Director, Caitie Wright

Hello Alumni!

It's great to connect with you again in 2012. We have lots of great things happening at the Camp Ki-Wa-Y site that I'm excited to share with you!

As many of you are aware, this past January, we had our First Annual Pond Hockey Day for boys and girls 7-12 years. With natural flooding and hard work, our staff created two smooth and sleek rinks on Paradise Lake. All the ice prep was well worth the effort, with a successful event that included pond hockey mixed games, tobogganing, and great food for all involved! Please help spread the word to your family, friends and neighbours for next year's January 2013 event. I would love to see many more teams, which are open to all levels and abilities of hockey players.

During pre camp this year, Camp Ki-Wa-Y welcomed senior staff from all three of our camps. For a few weeks, staff from Wab and Belwood joined Ki-Wa-Y pre-camp camp staff, participated in spring/summer staff training modules and were extremely helpful in starting the on-site spring opening of our non-winterized summer cabins. Now, with Wab and Belwood staff off to their respective sites, the Ki-Wa-Y staff continues to be hard at work gearing up for the camp season. This dedicated group daily displays their pride in the site, as well as constant excitement and enthusiasm with planning this summer's stream programs, activities and theme weeks. I truly am excited about working with everyone this season!

I also am very happy with the completion of two Camp Ki-Wa-Y/Outdoor Centre construction projects. The four new straw bale cabins are now officially open, having hosted our first school group in mid-May. These special environmentally designed cabins look fantastic as well as providing an ecological living space for students, campers and staff. A second project nearing completion this spring is our well- known lakeside boardwalk which has received some significant reconstruction repairs and now will continue to ensure a pleasant scenic walk to Pirates' Cove.

What else is new at Ki-Wa-Y? The Grand opening of our new fresh fruit and salad bar, the "Health Hut" took place this May and has added an exciting new dimension to dining at camp. This summer we are incorporating even more healthy options into our entire meal time program. Campers will participate in a Healthy Eating passport program which focuses on healthy food choices.

On June 16, I hope to see many of you at the Ki-Wa-Y Alumni Day where you can check out the salad bar and all its tasty and healthy options, and all of the other new and familiar stuff.

I wish everyone a happy and enjoyable summer season.
