Director Message, Ki-Wa-Y Fall 2012

A message from

Camp Ki-Wa-Y Director, Caitie Wright

Hello Alumni!

We enjoyed another great summer at Ki-Wa-Y, along with a really strong staff team. This year, each session opened with the Ki-Wa-Y Club Dance, and even the most reserved campers and staff enthusiastically joined, as though beckoned by the sound of the music! Check it out here. Warning...you may want to return to camp!

Also new for campers this summer were the four additional straw bale cabins, which opened this spring. Although this marks the end of an era since we are no longer sleeping in the original summer camp cabins, this part of our heritage still exists and will be used in other ways. The program pod, an indoor/outdoor gathering place for these cabin groups is really progressing. This amazing structure has almost as much outdoor deck space as indoor floor space! With our facility staff now working on the interior (drywall almost complete) I expect we will be using it in the summer of 2013.

This last summer we also introduced the "Health Hut" which we're delighted to report was more popular than we expected during lunchtime and mid-day snacks. Both campers and staff really loved the extra options of salad, vegetables and fruit. It was so well received by everyone, we wonder why we did not do it sooner!

Our camps continue to gradually shift our L.I.T. program by focusing more on the principles of Healthy Child Development and camp skills, rather than the old "boot camp" style that once existed. L.I.T.s continue to work very hard physically and challenge themselves personally, but we are really excited to be seeing the positive impact on these leaders since incorporating more of these very relevant soft skills.

As with all summers past, the closing camp fire was filled with teary eyed campers and staff saying goodbye. The only consolation to this is the knowledge that it is only 8 months until all that is summer camp reinvents itself once again!

Best wishes over the holiday season to you and your families.

Caitie
