Renovation at the Chaplin Family YMCA

What Is Happening?

Construction will begin in October 2017 on a renovation to the west end of the Chaplin Family YMCA (toward Dumfries conservation area).

The renovation will refurbish and reallocate space in the west wing of the 250 Hespeler Road building currently used by KidsAbility, Lifemark Physiotherapy, and YMCA membership, including;

  • Filling in the second floor of the atrium, creating more usable space
  • Housing YMCA Community Services, currently located in the 258 Hespeler Road building next door
  • Housing the Teen Drop in Zone, currently located in the 258 Hespeler Road building next door
  • Relocating physiotherapy to the first floor

Overall the renovation will increase the diversity of services in the Chaplin YMCA, and completes the plan to increase efficiency and cooperation between services that started with the sale of the 256-258 building next door (to the north).

Anticipated construction schedule:

October 2017 - June 2018

How Does This Affect Me?

  • Entry to YMCA membership services will be through the main entrance by the front desk. Access to membership services from the west end of the building will be restricted
  • Entrance and access to Physiotherapy Services will continue to happen from the west end of the building except for those needing elevator access which will require entrance by the front desk
  • Some membership programs will be temporarily relocated to former KidsAbility space on the south side of the building - specifics of program changes and timing will be communicated as the phasing of work progresses
  • There will be some noise and parking disruptions during the construction period and various phases of construction

Moving Forward

  • We will continue to update communications as the construction progresses and as programming details progress
  • Please provide comments and questions to YMCA staff throughout the process through comment cards, email or in person

We are looking forward to a renewed and rejuvenated facility with increased services and although there will be some inconvenience, we are confident that the new configuration will further enhance YMCA services in Cambridge.
