YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo

THAnk You!

It is with the generous support of many individuals, organizations and businesses that the YMCAs of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo are able to make a tremendous impact on the lives of children, youth, adults and families within our communities.  We would like to thank all of our donors for making the YMCA their charity of choice.  Together we are building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation

Thank you to The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation for investing in the needs of our community
with such generous support.  We are grateful to have received the following grants:

  • $2,500 from The Waterloo Record - Lyle S. Hallman Foundation Kids to Camp Fund to help send children from Kitchener, Waterloo, and the townships of Wilmot, Wellesley and Woolwich to day camp.
  • $25,165 to give 516 children ages 3-12 YMCA memberships at the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA.  This grant was made possible thanks to The Lyle S. Hallman Fund and the Dr. John D. Stewart Fund.
  • $20,000 to help build the Stork Family YMCA, which is under construction at the corner of Fischer-Hallman and Laurelwood.  This generous grant was made possible by the Community Fund and will be used to help pay for a gymnasium divider in the new facility allowing the YMCA to provide multiple programs at the same time.
  • $10,000 for renovations to the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA to improve access for seniors and people with disabilities ($5,000 from The Community Fund and $5,000 from The Motz Family Endowment).

JULY 2011

The Forzani Group

ForzaniJuly2011-resize.jpg The Forzani Group donated to both the Stork Family YMCA capital campaign and  the YMCA's financial assistance fundraising drive. By providing sports equipment  and funding to purchase additional items, The Forzani Group ensures the new  Stork Family YMCA is well-outfitted to deliver recreational sports activities to  children and youth. The Forzani Group donation to our financial assistance  program will provide more than 30 children with a full year's membership,  allowing the children access to our membership centres and all programs         delivered at each site.

Green Shield Canada

Green Shield Canada provides funding to enable the most vulnerable in its communities to access health and recreational opportunities and supported the Z Beside the Y Youth Centre with a donation to its operating budget. The Z Beside the Y welcomes all youth, aged 12 - 17, to its centre. In 2010, close to 1000 youths visited the Z more than 8500 times. The Z provides youth with a safe place to develop positive life skills, to build character, and to forge friendships with both their peers and with adult mentors.

Harry E. Foster Foundation

The Just Hanging Out program of the Z Beside the Y benefitted from financial support provided by the Harry E. Foster Foundation. Just Hanging Out was developed specifically to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for teens with cognitive and physical challenges where they can socialize, learn, and participate in recreational activities. The Harry E. Foster Foundation makes grants primarily to organizations providing programs for person with disabilities.

J.P. Bickell Foundation

J.P. Bickell Foundation donated to the A.R. Kaufman Many Healthy Returns Campaign. This generous contribution was directed to the accessibility project - installing a barrier-free entrance and an elevator to the newly constructed second floor. The J.P. Bickell Foundation has provided funding in previous years for innovative projects of the YMCA, specifically at the Outdoor Centre. The A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA has a yearly membership of about 7000 people. The addition of an elevator enables persons with mobility challenges to access the Wellness Centre and the accessible equipment housed there.

Elmira Maple Syrup Festival

The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival made a generous contribution to the YMCA membership assistance program. The new Stork Family YMCA opened in west Waterloo in September and is quickly becoming the family fitness centre for residents of Waterloo and the neighbouring townships. We anticipate that 50% of our membership will be under the age of 18 and  that 20% of these youth will require financial assistance. This financial support ensures we have funds on hand to meet this need.

Catholic Community Foundation of Waterloo Region

With support to the Kitchener Virtual Y program, this generous donation will be used to purchase nutritional snacks for the children. The Virtual Y is a literacy-based program focusing on academic support and social growth with a program model based on learning enhancement, health, and recreation, valuing education and building self-confidence.
