Stork Family YMCA in West Waterloo

The Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA is embarking on the boldest investment in our history made possible by a $10 million fundraising campaign. The major project in this campaign is the construction of a new 45,000 sq ft Family YMCA on a seven acre site at the intersection of Laurelwood Drive and Fischer-Hallman Road North in west Waterloo. The new Family YMCA is a result of a unique partnership with the University of Waterloo and the City of Waterloo to build a joint Family YMCA / Waterloo Public Library Branch. This will be a people-place where families, children, youth, adults and seniors of all ages, abilities and ethnic backgrounds can come together to learn, play, get active and belong.

The new YMCA is scheduled to open in the summer of 2011!

 Virtual YMCA

The Virtual YMCA is designed for children in grades SK - 5 living in under-serviced neighbourhoods of Kitchener-Waterloo that have limited access to resources, programs, services and transportation. Using a neighbourhood school as a delivery site, the Virtual YMCA connects with 40 children and their families. In Kitchener, the delivery site is St. John's Catholic School. Partnering with the school is vital to ensuring those students with the most need are in the program.

With a focus on prevention, the Virtual YMCA provides children with additional help and attention needed to succeed in academic studies, improving capacity to learn. Physical activity increases appreciation of team work, good sportsmanship, problem solving, and cooperation while improving overall health and developing a positive attitude and self esteem. Children feel valued, safe and free to express their thoughts and feelings developing positive relationships with adults and peers.

YMCA Camp Wabanaki Renewal

A beautiful northern camp with mature maple forests, towering pines, granite rocks and cliffs beside a deep-blue clear northern lake, YMCA Camp Wabanaki sits on a 40-acre site consisting of a large and small island and 23 acres of mainland. It has been a cornerstone of the KW YMCA's overnight camping program since it opened in 1939 - first on Beausoleil Island in Georgian Bay and since 1970 at our present site outside Huntsville.

Investment in Wabanaki will ensure this valuable traditional camping experience can be enjoyed by many youth for years to come. Updating and upgrading its facilities will help staff to better educate campers in the areas of nature, outdoor living and recreational skills.

Donors are supporting the following projects at YMCA Camp Wabanaki:

  • Development of the waterfront and island
  • Increased acreage
  • An improved dining hall
  • New cabins
