YMCA Cultural Diversity Office

WHO WE ARE

Our vision for Cambridge is an inclusive community where everyone belongs and lives in harmony.

The mission of the Cultural Diversity Office is to mobilize the skills and capacities of our diverse community, by providing opportunities and resources to create an inclusive, respectful and engaged Cambridge.

A variety of programs and services are available for individuals and groups. All of these aim to help individuals and groups learn about culture, reduce discrimination and build their own capacity.

Cultural Diversity programs and services have 2 main purposes:

1)  Help immigrants build skills to help them integrate into the Canadian context in Cambridge.

2)  Help Canadian citizens and groups (Organizations, Employers and Agencies ) ensure they have the capacity (knowledge,  sensitivity, and resources) to welcome and continue to engage immigrants into their activities.

Why Does Cambridge Need a Cultural Diversity Plan?

It was the SPCCND conclusion that, "Cambridge is a growing community that has a demand for ethno-culturally diverse services.  Many barriers exist in our community that must be removed so that newcomers can successfully settle and become a contributing and supported part of our community" ("Multiculturalism in Cambridge & North Dumfries", Social Planning Council, 2003).

Issues of Cultural Diversity are gaining vital importance in Cambridge. According to 2006 census data, nearly 21% of Cambridge residents were not born in Canada. It is estimated that by 2026, 100% of population growth in Cambridge will come from immigrants.

The City of Cambridge decided over 10 years ago to entrust the YMCA to create the Cultural Diversity Programs and Services and thereby fostering harmony and respect in our city.
