YMCA Beyond the Bell

Closing the Achievement Gap

In Waterloo Region the gap between rich and poor continues to grow.  Living in poverty is linked to difficulties including poor nutrition, behavioural and emotional problems, and lower levels of education.  Early academic achievement is an indicator of future academic success, if a child cannot read at their grade level by grade three, there is a greater chance they will not graduate high school.

YMCA Beyond the Bell minimizes the academic achievement gap experienced by low-income children.  Emphasizing literacy, numeracy, recreation, homework help and character development, gives children the additional help they need to keep pace with their grade level and their middle class peers.

By giving children access to innovative support programs like the YMCA Beyond the Bell, children show marked improvement in their self-perception, school bonding and positive social behaviours as well as their academic performance through test scores, grades and attendance.

An investment in the lives of children is an investment in the future health and well-being of our entire community.

When the gap is this wide, Children can fall through the cracks

Through our outcome measurement process we know that by emphasizing on literacy, numeracy, recreation, homework help and values education, YMCA Beyond the Bell gives children the additional help they need to keep pace with their grade level and peers.

  • Open to children in grades 1 through 5
  • Parents apply to the program based on their child's need of support in academics and/or social skills
  • Partnership with school principal and teachers as well as parents ensure individual support and attention provided is meaningful and appropriate
